Dr. John’s debut album, Gris-Gris, was released in 1968 on Atco Records. Produced by Harold Battiste, it introduced Mac Rebennack’s alter ego, Dr. John, as a unique blend of New Orleans R&B, psychedelic funk, swamp blues, and swamp rock. The album’s title, Gris-Gris, refers to a type of talisman used in voodoo rituals.
